Note: This book is out of print but this lesson can be used with any of the Hungry Thing series. One idea is that the teacher may want to scan the book and use the LCD projector or Smart Board to project the story on a large screen.
Objective
Students will be able to create a digital story retelling the tale of The Hungry Thing.
Description of lesson
Day 1
1. Read the story, The Hungry Thing Returns to the students using the DRTA (Directed Reading, Thinking Approach).She then moves around classroom assisting students when necessary.She then moves around classroom assisting students when necessary.
2. After reading break students into groups of three.Explain that one child will be responsible for drawing a picture of what happened at the beginning of the story, one will draw a picture of the middle, and one will draw a picture of the end of the story.
3. Assist the students in opening up KidPixs or Microsoft Paint. (Any other paint program will also work.). They may begin creating their paint picture.
4. Early finishers may work on the activity below. The teacher will need to assure that students save their work.
The Hungry Thing Online Lesson
Day 2 (Students are again assigned to work in groups of three.)
1. The teacher deomonstrates how to access the story creation tool of her choice (PowerPoint, MovieMaker, Photo Story, HyperStudio, etc) using a LCD or SmartBoard.
2. Teacher demonstrates how to browse to the students' saved files and import pictures. She then moves around classroom assisting students when necessary.
3. Teacher demonstrates how to arrange pictures in the digital creation tool.
4. Students save their work.
Day 3
In groups of three students retell the story of The Hungry Thing using their digital story.
