A Memory of Me by Melanie Lewis

Prerequisite Technolgoy Skills Needed:  Prerequisite technology skills needed:  Students will need to have basic point click and drag mouse skills.  They will need to be able to save and recover files from a specified folder. Typing skills are manatory  I had students type up the final copies of their personal narratives and save it to a folder.  Then I had them browse to the folder and pull up the narratives.  I also had them importing pictures all year into programs such as Inspiration and KidPix. If they can do this they will be able to use Movie Maker.  To digitize their pictures for use with Movie Maker, we spent some time learning how to scan images with a scanner.  We also had a brief lesson on how to use a digital camera although no child was allowed to take the camera home.  Students were taught to frame their pictures and to zoom in to photo subject and  eliminate unecessary elements.

Time Allotment:  40-60 minute time slots for a one week period

Objective

Students will be able to create a  personal narrative.

Description of lesson

Days 1-3  (Preparation for this project is to create a folder on the desktop for student use.  They will need to save digital images, writings, and plannings.  One way I managed this was to have my support tech department create for me a shared folder that students could save to.)

·Partner the students up with a tape recorder.  Record a moment being told by a student.  Then record a piece without voice being read by student.  Ask if the first one could be put into words.  How would you do that?  Would you write every single word that was said?  YES!

·To help students focus on a purpose students place events from their life on a time line.  After this task, students choose one event on the time line to write about and create another timeline of that one event.  Students could also use Inspiration or Kidspiration to focus their story depending on the learning style of the student.

·Students need an audience in order to have purpose to provide details.  (this is especially a hard task for young students.)  Ask student/s who they would want to know how they feel about that moment (they chose on the time line).  Tell them to imagine they are speaking to that person during the story.  Have them note their audience on their time line or Inspiration document

·Have students write out a paragraph or story about the event.  They are to write as if they are talking to the person they designated as the audience.  This writing goes through the writing process of rough draft, revision and editing.

·To develop ideas for Publishing, have students note on their time line or Inspiration map what a snapshot of each moment would look like if a photo was taken at at moment.  Pass out story boards and provide students with an opportunity to complete.

·Send students home with the assignment of bringing in 2-3 of themselves if they have any that correlate to their narrative.  Using Microsoft Paint or Kid Pix, students could also “draw” events depicted on their story board.

Day 4- 5

·Students continue to create their pictures and scan their images for the story.  The teacher may still at this point continue to meet with the students for editing.  Students may also record the narratives.  At this point it is nice to have another teacher or parent in the room.

Day 6-7 (Prior to the students use of Movie Maker, the teacher needs to make sure that the students have saved their images and sound files to a folder.)

·Students boot up computer and launch Movie Maker or Photo Story 3 program.  Teacher uses LCD or SmartBoard to lead them through importing their pictures, and sound.

·Students save projects.  Teacher may burn to a DVD or CD for students to take home.

Assessment Strategies

The finished stories are the assessment.  Here is an example of a child's digital storyboard.
